Deciding A Role
There is an on-going debate about the ultimate target for the movement. It could be:
- A pressure and lobby group attempting co-ordinate public action in order to influence planning decisions;
- A registered trust or charity attempting to influence the strategic decisions made by the local council and developers, and that could be either as a stand-alone organisation or affiliated to another existing organisation;
- Or it could cast its net wider and become a national organisation, concerned with Britain's heritage, and attempt to influence regional bodies and national heritage policy.
Clearly, the more wide-ranging the goals, the more effort has to go into achieving them, and eventually as the organisation grows and becomes more ambitious, a point will be reached where key personnel are employed rather than being volunteers. To do that, effort will have to be diverted from the Watchdog role and put into fund raising.
An initial committee has been set up to get the Watchdog under way, with an elected Chair and Vice-chair to provide leadership for each meeting and volunteers to lead on specific issues. Others because of their knowledge and experience attend to advise.
